Magic!

Magic!

Illustration Friday rolls around again and here is my submission for this week's theme: Magic

There are so many great ideas for this theme, mine seems simple and yet we see "magic" in the simple things in life.

The Last Day of the Year

The Last Day of the Year

This picture is kind of how I was feeling right after Christmas, after all that preparation, decorating, cooking etc. I almost always feel that way right after Christmas presents are opened and there are lots of people around. Glad we begin the new year tomorrow.

Today will be a nice quiet day as yesterday was and then tonight we'll be off to a nice party. I don't like to do resolutions but I do think about the last year and what I want for the coming year. So I suppose as much as possible today will be a day of contemplation.

In the morning I'll be fixing my annual batch of melt in your mouth New Year's Day Orange Rolls, my family would feel like they missed something if I didn't fix them. We'll also watch the Rose Parade and have Chalupa later in the day. Those are my traditions for NYD.

So for now it's time to go and fix a late breakfast, we're having Bacon, Egg and Cheese on English Muffins, Yum!

You guys have made my year better with your support, sharing your art and your lives as well as friendship, Thanks so much!

Chalupa, Tamales, Drawings

Chalupa, Tamales, Drawings

I guess this drawing is self explanatory, another of the drawings born out of distress.

Last night after all of the other stuff of the day was finally finished we sat down and watched Return of the King and I did my drawing. It was a pleasant evening with harmony all around. I love that, when we can get on sweats and warm foot wear and feel free to relax like that.

Today I have a huge pot of Chalupa in my roaster oven, the house is filled with strong garlic and Mexican spice aroma, it's wonderful. I had made Chalupa on the 18th but it got eaten right away and I wanted to have some put away in the freezer so I had to do a re-run. The family is real happy that there will be a nice hot and yummy dinner ready this evening.

Today my plan is to do more drawing, I started my daily drawings in late January of 2004 but I'd really like to finish on the last day of the year so I need to get some extras done and as you know, the time is almost here. Hmmm, I guess it's time to count them and see how many more I need.

Ok, so I'm feeling relaxed and expecting kind of a nice laid back day. How about you?

Any plans for New Year's Eve?

We have a party to go to that sounds fun, it's a tamale making, game playing, celebrating kind of party. Tanner will have kids to play with too, it's a family thing. I'm hoping that it snows today and tomorrow so we'll have a white blanket of snow to represent the clean slate of the new year, wouldn't that be great? The weather report says it could snow today and tomorrow so there is some hope here.

Ok, I'm off to find out how many drawings I need to complete my project, see ya later.

Rushing around today

Rushing around today

Back to the drawings that are sort of depressive looking....

Yesterday Tanner and I had fun together, we did the things I mentioned and went to the mall where we goofed off for a long time.
Today we're off for a walk early then some errands and who knows what else. I'm finding it difficult to spend much time at the computer the last few days.
Hope you all are doing well and ready to ring in the new year with gusto!
See ya later!

Happy lil' bird

Happy lil' bird

Today's drawing reflects my mood this morning. I am feeling like a happy lil' bird in a tidy nest. In fact I'm sure when I woke up to a clean house this morning I heard the Hallelujah Chorus! Maybe it was just coming from inside me though.

Anyway, Paul and Tanner and I went for a walk early and then out to breakfast, that was nice. Now Tanner and I will be sitting down to write Thank yours and then going out for a while today.

I got more Christmas cards today! Thanks to crazy4art for the cute card and nice note! I love getting Christmas cards especially when people actually write in them, to me it's like a little gift :-D

So I guess I'll get a move on and make this a good day!

Trouble hangs around like a bad smell

Trouble hangs around like a bad smell

Today's drawing is a response to some problems that we encountered over the holiday. If we could live in peace for a whole month it would be a miracle. I didn't want to share my disturbing drawings during the holiday when things are supposed to be jolly but since they are part of this years project they will be shared now.

Today I plan on taking down the Christmas tree and packing away all the decorations because I want to get the house all clean and spiffy so I can enjoy the week more. It's a fairly tall order but I'm hopeful.

I'm hoping to come back here with something more interesting to share later, for now, I've got work on my mind. After breakfast that is.

Christmas is O O Over

Christmas is O O Over

First the daily drawing for your viewing pleasure!

Paul and I are going to do a bit of shopping today, we don't usually do that but there are some mighty fine sales today and Dan has Tanner so we will be out and about for a while. First to church then to chaos in town.

So did your Christmas go well, was it memorable? Mine was nice, quiet and not particularly memorable. Holly and I are now starting to get a bit weepy about her leaving in a couple of weeks.

Ah, gotta run, time to get cleaned up this morning. Cya later.

This is how I'm feeling

This is how I'm feeling

I'm feeling way to fat! Stuffed, arg! Like this lady:

Christmas is pretty much over for us, we opened all the presents last night and today Tanner has gone to be with his mom for a few hours. It was nice.
We also went to a sweet candlelight service where Holly read the Christmas story and we sang wonderful Christmas songs and a woman painted throughout the service. She had done an underpainting of many different people's faces with all different expressions as they looked at the Christ child. When the service started it looked like just a canvas of maroon paint but she used the pentimento method and gradually removed paint to reveal the faces leaving the center of the canvas covered until later when she revealed the Christ child there, the reason for the varied expressions. It was quite effective and I admire her courage to do such a project. Tanner loved getting to hold a burning candle during the end of the service!

I had set my oven for time bake so our meal was pretty much ready when we got home and all the food turned out delicious. Better than that, we had great conversation during dinner, I always love that.
Afterward we opened presents, of course Tanner had the biggest pile and he seemed to have fun and be truly grateful for what he received. He had carefully picked out gifts for everyone else too and was very proud to pass them out and see us open them. As I tucked him in last night he said, " Thank you so much for all my presents Nanny, I love everything I got". Of course we had gotten lots of hugs of gratitude earlier but I felt like it was nice that he was feeling reflective and had a good attitude before he went to sleep.

So now, we are about ready to go pick him up from his moms. I had thought he would be there longer but as it turns out he'll be here most of the day so I probably won't get to work on next year's card all day as planned. Oh well, if I get a good start on it I'll try to be ok with that.

Hope all of you are having a wonderful day!

(It's so weird, I'm actually in the mood to go shopping... huh?)

Merry Christmas to All

Merry Christmas to All

Today's drawing and a greeting for all of you:

So the day is upon us and I hope as you all are busy with preparations that your thoughts will be filled with great memories from Christmas' past and that this very Christmas of 2004 will become one of the ones remembered fondly for all the right reasons!

I'm pretty well prepared but I do have to go out again today. I bought a present for a Child on the Angel Tree which is a ministry of the Salvation Army and now that the present is wrapped it must be taken to a drop off place, I also need eggs and a couple of other things. After that it will just be a matter of getting things organized for Dinner and that's it!

No snow today me thinks, right now it's very cold (20's) and bright sunshine streaming in, it is lovely even if it's not snowing. I may not be back today and I suspect most of us won't be, I hope your next 2 days are just perfect!

The finish line

The finish line

So getting the packages wrapped is the finish line for me- I'll be done today and then all that's left is a ham dinner with is very simple compared to Thanksgiving's large and more elaborate meal.
My plan is to relax and enjoy myself tomorrow, and maybe this evening too.
Hope you guys are getting it all done and not feeling overwhelmed, I hate that feeling.
Coffee is calling with it's rich aroma, I need a hot cup of Joe to get me going this morning!

Home

Home

For Illustration Friday the theme this week is "Home".

I've done lots of drawings this year that fit the theme but I choose this one because I felt like it best describes how I feel about my home and drawing. I love to be home and working on my art. My studio is in my home and I love it! The file for this image is large because the drawing is done in pen and ink and it didn't seem to be very viewable in the smaller size.

Back to Christmas

Back to Christmas

Good mornin', It's very frosty white outside this morning, burrrrrrrr. But no snow :-(
I did this little drawing while trying to come up with card designs but it's one of the rejects even though I like it. I ended up using one of the Santa ones instead.

Finished my Christmas Shopping yesterday and it turned out to be real easy. I decided that money was the best fit for my kids and so I just took Tanner out to buy for his mom and dad and little brother. The funny part of taking Tanner was that he was looking at "diamond" rings, he wanted to buy something sparkly for his mom. We looked at all the glittery costume jewelry and finally he decided to buy her a set of 3 candles with rhinestones on the little glasses that they are in. She is not the kind of mom to wear glittery jewelry.
Last night while Dan and Tanner went team roping Paul and I shopped for Tanner. It didn't take long which was nice.

Now I have wrapping and baking to do and I like to do my baking last so things are in order, yippeee!

How are you guys doing, are you getting it done?

Good Mornin'

Good Mornin'

Today's drawing is Katie and another friend, this is my favorite one!

Last nights gathering was fun and quiet, it really turned out just how I wanted it. I had made this huge pot of Chalupa, 3 lbs of black beans and a large pork roast, and when our guests left there were only about 3 cups left. It was really yummy and a big hit.

I may be back later, right now it's time to wake the boys up.

Katie and Vicky

Katie and Vicky

This is the second of the drawings I did for my friend. She's Katie (the blond)and her friend is Vicky.

Today I'll be bopping around the house most of the day and our little holiday gathering is tonight. Tomorrow I will be out shopping, I'm not interested in doing anything else besides getting it done and all gifts wrapped, only then will I feel free to do holiday baking.

The theme for Illustration Friday this week is Adoption.

This illustration has a personal story. Last May my husband and I took legal, permanent guardianship of our grandson, Tanner. We had always had him a lot, but this meant so much more, Tanner was 8 years old in August.
I drew this while learning to cope with the new changes to my life , adding another demanding life long obligation. We adore Tanner and I'm happy to say that for the most part we have made the adjustments necessary but it was rough for a while and I was trying to express that in this little illustration.

A quiet day- yippee!

A quiet day- yippee!

Today's drawing is a commissioned piece. A friend of mine had me do 3 of the drawings, one for each of her best friends to be given them as Christmas gifts. She gave me information about the color of hair each gal had and about the relationship she had with each one. This particular one is her best friend, the kind of friend that provides wise counsel, is always comfortable and although they live in different states, there seems to be no distance between them. She gave me no idea about what her friends actually look like so my images are just symbols of the relationships.

Today I will be preparing in earnest for our get together tomorrow night, just housework, some baking and stuff. Actually it will be kind of fun. I bought lots of candles so I can pretty much leave all the lights off besides the Christmas tree and try to have a nice cozy atmosphere. The house does look nice with it's holiday decor.

Yesterday my mom and I went to a coffee shop near her house that is really swell. It's in an old arts and crafts style home and almost all the walls are lined with books and art, the floors are hard wood, there are small tables and chairs as well as soft, comfy sofas and chairs. There are several small rooms and all have a nice cozy feel.
The place is called, The Library. I didn't take pictures, maybe next time. My mom and I just enjoyed sipping our drinks and talking for a long time, it was nice.

Hopefully today I will find time to come back to my computer and check in on my friends here.

Better

Better

Having gotten all my cards mailed out and having all the decorations up has made me feel better. I still don't have any shopping done but I am anticipating doing some on Sunday and then finishing on Monday. Hopefully.

Today I'll be out getting all that I need for the little get together we are having on Saturday night. I'm also taking time with my little mommy to go and have coffee. I miss her, I haven't seen her since before my sister left. We're going to a nifty little coffee house called The Library.

I bought the most beautiful nativity scene at Costco the other day! I've been wanting one for years but couldn't find one that I could afford in the style I wanted until now. Here it is,

Isn't it wonderful? I have it on the mantle and every time I look at it I feel so happy to have it.

Hope you are all enjoying a great day and making progress on the Christmas ordeal.

Stress

Stress

This girl loves to shop, but I don't.

I have never put myself under this much stress for the holidays.... and I won't do it again. I waited to long to get things ready for Christmas and now I'm paying the price. I haven't bought one present yet and it will be a day or two before I go Christmas shopping. Yesterday Holly and I did errands and went to Costco but I still have to get more stuff at the regular grocery store. Oh well, today I have the whole day ahead of me and I will be working hard to get things done.

I'm even planning on doing next year's Christmas card right away after Christmas to next year won't be so stressful. Cya later!

Nose to the grindstone

Nose to the grindstone

Another break from the Christmas theme, I think this one was started with a squiggle, can't remember. She's very prissy and into herself, can you tell?

I've got way to much to do this week and last night didn't sleep well so I'm dragging my backside today. We are having a little Christmas get-together on Saturday night and that is what is making me busier than usual. I'm planning on a low key, simple evening of visiting with a few (4 couples) friends. We are going to have black bean Chalupa which is simple and yummy and casual as well. (want the recipe?)
I've rearranged my dining area and living room to accommodate the Christmas decorations and I really like it. It's a relief to have the tree up and shining. I did all green lights and it's real pretty, I'll try and get a good picture.
There are no presents under the tree, I've done no shopping yet, EEK! I think today I will have to run to Costco though so maybe I'll come back with at least one present to wrap and drive Tanner crazy with :-)

Time to get a move on here. I'm not getting a chance to enjoy LJ these days, I'm neglecting my friends but I'll be back when I can.

Monday is Good!

Monday is Good!

'mornin'

Here is another little Christmassy drawing for you:

Paul and I are rushing around here getting Tanner off to school and leaving ourselves for an appointment. I finally got into the Holiday mood now that my Christmas tree is up and the house is almost decorated. Now I can think about shopping for gifts. But the very next thing is getting the Christmas cards out.
If you would like to receive one of my cards please drop me an e-mail with your address and all and I'll do my best to get one to you!

It was so cute, this morning Tanner got all the lights on the tree turned on before I came into the living room and he was standing there with eyes glowing proclaiming how beautiful it was. When the kids appreciate all the work it helps make it worthwhile doesn't it?

Ok, a break from the Christmas drawings, here is today's little drawing of fishes for you!

I am feeling so happy that I got all my housework done yesterday, today we will go get our Christmas tree! Oh, and I am hopeful that I'll be mailing out my Christmas cards tomorrow morning.
Tanner is right next to me being amazed that I can write these words without looking at the keyboard. He's found out that it can be done so maybe he'll want to learn himself, ya think?

The Cards, the Drawing, the Party

The Cards, the Drawing, the Party

Hey it's Saturday morning and it's almost 9 am, I just got up! This is really, really late for me but we were up until 1:30 this morning because the NFR was on so late.
Actually I watched very little because I was drawing and also working on the cards. I have an HP 7550 Photosmart printer and I've been using it to print the cards, it is very, very slow. I'm also putting that pretty Crystal glitter on each one, oh yea, it's a pretty big project at least for doing one's Christmas cards. I'm doing 50 with the glitter. I've got them all printed and about 31 have been glittered so I'm almost done!

Oh, you want today's drawing? Here you go then:

Tonight is the Christmas party for the company Paul works for, Holland Realty. It's a really nice party at the Crane Creek Country Club and we go every year. I'm wearing a purple velvet lounge type pant outfit. I wore it last year too, it's very pretty and comfortable and still dressy enough for the party so I'm happy to wear it again.

It is my goal to get a Christmas tree up this weekend but I want to have my cards mostly done and my house clean first so I'd better get with it.
Ewww, I'm really hungry when I get up so late in the morning.

Illustration Friday!

Illustration Friday!

Today's theme is Security, what is security to you?

Today is the day I go to Tanner's class and do the art lesson. We'll be making masks with construction paper, I think the lesson is sort of fun but not my favorite. Hopefully the kids will think it's fun. I will try to get some pictures of the kids masks.

Right now I've got to go make one myself so I know how to teach the kids.

Feeling so Dorky!

Feeling so Dorky!

Good Morning!

Today's drawing is of course another attempt to get the holiday spirit moving. I think the drawing reflects my actual feelings quite well.

Every morning I have a few pills to take, I take them right when I get up so I won't forget. I also get Tanner's Concerta (time released Ritalin) out and set it out with water for him to take when he comes into the kitchen for breakfast. Have you guessed it? I took Tanner's pill this morning, eek, I was just on auto drive with pill and water in hand and didn't even think about what I was doing. Now I'm feeling real dorky. I did this once 20 years ago with Daniels pill.
So I'll either be revved up today or if I tend to be A.D.D. myself I will be real focused today. I am kind of curious to see which way it a
effects me.

Yesterday I spent hours on my Christmas card design. I've never learned how to use Photo Shop before and wanted to make some changes to my drawing so I was bumbling around a lot. I did come up with a final idea (pretty sure) so I'll probably print some up today.

I had planned on a day out today but I'm behind on this project and besides it's another rainy day and I feel like staying home.

This is the last day to have the neighbor's boy here in the morning. It's been fine, he's no trouble but tomorrow we'll probably sleep in a little just because we can. We've been staying up late watching the National Finals Rodeo which lasts till after midnight.

Got to go get the boys on the bus, cya.

Stormy Weather

Stormy Weather

We are having a storm that is so disturbing, the wind is blowing so hard it sounds like it's going to blow our roof off! It blew like this last night and the night before but today it's blowing and raining.
I like rain and snow and even some wind but this is too much!

Today I plan to finalize my decision for a Christmas card design and get them printed.

Off to get the boys fed and on the bus.

Tuesday, December 07, 2004

Look who showed up today?

Look who showed up today?

Today's drawing was brought to you by an attempt to get in the mood for Christmas.

Is this attempt helping? I really can't say, I worked on my Christmas card design yesterday and didn't actually make a decision or get it done. We've decided to buy a tree instead of go cut one (time is the problem) and I do have some ideas for gifts. Hmmmm..... I guess it's helping a little.

Gotta get the boys to the school bus now. Cya.

Merry Monday

Merry Monday

Today's drawing is a squiggle drawing like most of the others I've done this year. Squuuaaaakkkkk!!!!!

I like Mondays, I think it's because I feel like Monday is a day that I can be productive and it's more predictable than weekends.

Last night I went to a birthday party at Rembrandt's, it was fun and while we were there it was snowing great big beautiful flakes that fell slowly and shone in the street lights. I love snow.

I took some pictures there and will post them later after Tanner is off to school.

I've got one of Tanner's little friends here this morning because his parents are out of town and needed me to drop him off to the bus stop with Tanner. Man is it noisy! In fact I think I'd better go and oversee these two......

Number 8

Yes, today's drawing is brought to you by the number 8!

It's late for me to post, I had to go to town this morning and do some errands and now I am going to go take a nap because I went to bed late last night and didn't sleep well. I'll come back later when I'm more alert.

Illustration Friday- Bubble

Illustration Friday- Bubble

Living in a Bubble is an awkward attempt to describe that attitude that I realized I had for many years of my life- like I was untouchable in a way. I didn't think the dangers and disasters in life would seriously effect my world. I just floated above reality (in my own mind) without giving it much thought. I really wasn't aware of how devastating and harsh life in the real world could be.

Of course my bubble hit a snag and I was dropped and impaled suddenly and inescapably. Now I'm learning to heal and navigate through the perils of life. I'm finding that it's not all bad and what I've learned is helping me to become a more understanding and compassionate person.

I know, I know, I got all into it with this theme. That is one of the joys for me though, that I can use my art to articulate and communicate my ideas and experiences.

Now that I've done this little drawing with the bubble concept I have all kinds of ideas about how I can illustrate the idea better, Woo Hoo!

Laying Low

Laying Low

Today's drawing is brought to you by the number 7.

Yesterday both Paul and I felt like we were coming down with some kind of sickness so today we plan to lay kind of low and try and ward it off. Being sick is such a time waster and lord knows I'm already good at that.

Tanner has quite a cough, I sent him to school anyway but I won't be surprised if he's home tomorrow. He's not seeming sick in any other way, has plenty of energy and all, it's just that nasty cough. Why does cough medicine taste so incredibly awful? Poor kid just gags and wretches when he has to take it. I think I'll see if I can find something in swallowable pill form to give him tonight.

I am unmotivated to do the housework or anything today and yet I feel pressure because Christmas is coming. I like to have the house clean and my space organized before I put up a tree and I like to have a real good plan before I go shopping. Oh well, I'll probably procrastinate another day since I'm feeling this way.

I know, boring post. I'll shut up now and see what my friends are doing instead of talking about what I am not doing.

Let's hear it for the number 6~

Let's hear it for the number 6~

Today's drawing, pathetic looking as the little girl is, brought to you by the letter 6!

Normally on Tuesday evenings Tanner goes roping with Paul and Dan and Holly and I go to a Contemplative Group for the evening. Last night however, as I was on my way to my group Holly called from downtown and needed me to come get her because her car had gotten a flat. On the way it started snowing, it snowed the whole time we were holed up in a coffee shop (The Flying M) while we waited for a guy to come fix her car. It was so beautiful sitting sipping a mocha and watching the snow fall down town! Well, we live about 15 to 20 miles from the down town area but the roads were so slick coming home (and Holly had one of those little donut tires on her car) that it took us a full 1 hour and 15 minutes to get home! Whew! Today the roads are still very icy.

I will be doing housework today, man or man does a house get trashed when you have company for 11 days! I'll feel great when it's done and maybe even get in the mood to put up our tree in a day or two!

Gotta run.....
